Disrupting a Billion-Dollar Industry: The Alpha Abstract Story

In a world where most title insurance companies operate the exact same way, with the same product and the same fixed price, how do you stand out?
For Dakota Kaleck and his brother Ryder, the answer was simple:bring a fresh mindset, leverage technology, and actually help your clients grow.
In this episode of theMoving Mountainspodcast, host Dr. Lance Knaub sits down with Dakota to uncover the remarkable journey behind Alpha Abstract Title Agency—a company that went from two brothers working 10-hour days to a thriving seven-figure business in just a few years.
The Unconventional Start
Fresh out of Penn State's business school, Dakota knew one thing for sure: he didn't want a traditional corporate job. Instead, he took the unconventional path, working with his real estate attorney uncle and getting hands-on experience in fix-and-flip projects and student apartment buildings.
When his brother Ryder graduated a year later with a finance degree, they joined forces. But with limited cash flow, they couldn't afford another salary. So Ryder took a different route—he got his title license and learned to run their uncle's title company from the ground up, wearing every single hat in the process.
That intense, sink-or-swim experience proved invaluable.
By 2019, the brothers realized they wanted more. They saw an industry filled with outdated companies and older owners who weren't innovating. So in March 2020—right as COVID hit—they launched Alpha Abstract Title Agency.
From $50k to Seven Figures
The early days were all about survival. Their goal wasn't to build an empire—it was simply to replace the $50,000 salary each had been making.
They did that within year one. Actually, they doubled it.
By year two, they hit the million-dollar revenue mark—still with just the two of them doing everything. But then came the plateau. They couldn't grow beyond $1 million because they were trapped in the day-to-day operations.
The turning point?Learning to let go.
They hired Joan, a secretary they trained from scratch, who's still with them today. Then they brought on experienced title employees. Now, in 2024, Alpha Abstract has seven employees, and Dakota and Ryder have freed themselves from the grind to focus on scaling the business.
The Setback That Wasn't a Waste
No entrepreneurial journey is without its valleys. Dakota shares a particularly painful one: their biggest and most expensive hire—an experienced sales leader—didn't work out. After nearly a year, they had to let him go.
"It stunk," Dakota admits. "We felt like we wasted a whole year, a ton of money, a lot of time and energy."
But here's where the mindset shift comes in.
Rather than dwell on the loss, they reframed it as an investment. They spent that time figuring outwhyit wasn't the right fit—and now they have a much clearer picture of what therighthire looks like.
That's the power of "The Gap, Not the Gain"—a concept from Dr. Ben Hardy and Dan Sullivan that Dakota credits with helping him step back and appreciate how far they've actually come.
How to Disrupt a Stale Industry
The title insurance space is unique: the product is identical across every agency, and the price is fixed. So how do you compete?
Many companies resort to illegal kickbacks or gray-area joint ventures. Alpha Abstract took a different approach.
Their value proposition is twofold:
Superior Service:They use video emails to walk agents and end consumers through documents and accounting sheets before closing—making the process transparent and easy.
A Proprietary Lead Generation Program:They built a custom data tool that helps agents and loan officers target homeowners based on equity, interest rates, and location—complete with contact information. And it's offered at no cost to clients who work with Alpha Abstract.
"I don't need to give you a kickback," Dakota explains. "I can teach you how to grow your business."
That's the differentiator. That's what sets them apart in a billion-dollar industry.
Dakota's Top Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
When asked for his best advice for those chasing success in life and business, Dakota kept it simple:
Just start. There is no perfect time. Whether you're young, broke, expecting a child, or in the middle of a pandemic—the timing will never be right. But there's also no better time than right now.
Buy and protect your time.Focus on running and growing your business, not on doing every task yourself. Bring in people who can handle the operational work so you can focus on high-level strategy. That's how you go from 2x to 10x revenue.
